YELLOW DUCK NEWS
Throughout the year we try to introduce our Yellow Ducks to various forms of art and artists. We hope to not only expand their knowledge & develop critical thinking and motor skills, but foster self-confidence as we show them that artists create in unique ways. There is no RIGHT way to make art!
Our focus this week was on sculpture. We talked about how paintings are flat (like a pancake), but sculptures stand up and can be seen from all sides. We used water to stick Superpuffs together and tried to make them stand- very tricky! Then we used skewers in some clay to create bead and foam sculptures. One usually reluctant artist said, “I’m actually kinda having fun!”. Finally we used air dry clay to make some very cute turkeys. Check out our gallery in the office hallway!
We worked on math skills this week as we counted and sorted muffins in the Muffin Match game and found the correct keys to open the locks stuck on our laundry basket.
We are almost at the end of learning the sounds & movements to go with the alphabet. Have you heard your Duck singing “Who let the A out…/a/, /a/, /a/”? Soon we will revisit the letters, work on recognizing syllables, rhymes, and maybe even do some blending. Many of our Ducks are interested and ready for beginning reading!
We had a great time making scissor spaghetti and had to add a scissor salad the following day, since it was so much fun!! Who knew a skein of yarn could cause such delight? All the while our little friends were working on scissor skills, communication & cooperation.
Everyone enjoyed having another student visitor read to them on Tuesday. Libby’s sister, Emily (another former Duck), came to read I Broke My Trunk and The Book With No Pictures. Thank you, Emily!!
The holidays are approaching at rapid speed…there is so much excitement coming up. Take some time to relax, get outside to enjoy the beautiful weekend ahead and have some fun with your Duck!!
